The mandatory licensing of immigration advisers was introduced in May 2007 with the Immigration Advisers Licensing Act 2007. Lawyers holding a current practising certificate are exempt from the licensing requirements. Now the Immigration Advisers Authority has introduced a mandatory licensing scheme also for international, off-shore advisers:
