Stricter rules for work permits

Whereas in previous years it was relatively easy for immigrant workers to renew their work visa,  the downturn in the economy has changed that. A policy change by NZ Immigration means renewal applications are now much more scrutinised. Main considerations are whether available NZ citizens or permanent residents could also do the job and whether the prefered (overseas) applicant is uniquely qualified. As with previous renewals and first-time applications, employers will also need to show that they made genuine attempts to recruit NZ citizens in the first place, but were not successful.
